Letter sent to SA tennis coaches - September 2009
How does it work?
The VAMOS! online application has been developed for tennis enthusiasts who enjoy the excitement of singles. Registration is free, and players can look up contact details and ranking info of other players. Courts' availability can also be checked, and online bookings can be made once two players have agreed to challenge each other. The outcome of the match is also captured online by either player (or a player with admin rights), and the system automatically updates the rankings. These rankings are then used for invitational tournaments, as sponsored by The Mirror Group of Companies.
A player's ranking is calculated as the average % of games won against all players in the same league and region/club during the past year. With other words, matches that took place more than a year ago, fall away, as well as matches played against players who are now competing in a different league or region.
For instance, Player A played three matches against Player B, winning 20 out of 40 games, thus having an average win ratio of 50% against Player B. Player A also played a few matches against Player C, winning only 10 out of 50 games, thus having an average win ratio of 20% against Player C. The over-all average calculated for Player A is thus (50+20) / 2 = 35%
The technology for the system is sponsored by The Mirror Group of Companies, providing a free service to the tennis-loving community; also showcasing how Mirror's technology presents an alternative to traditional browser applications that are very complex and costly to develop and operate. For more examples and information on this innovative, alternative approach towards utilizing the Internet, kindly visit www.mirrorsa.co.za.
The service is provided to players in good faith, and by using the system, you agree not to hold the Sponsor liable for any direct or indirect losses resulting from usage of the system.
If you have any queries or suggestions, or would like to add more regions, please contact Gustav Oberholzer at gustavo@mirrorsa.co.za.
Enjoy, VAMOS!
